community-wide joint worship service on September 24

Hey, everyone!

You heard from Kitty Key recently that we are having a community-wide
joint worship service on September 24. What you did not hear is something
very exciting! We are going to have a giant massed choir!!! The choir will
be from many churches and other faiths. We want every United Methodist
Church represented in this choir! And the music is going to be fun!

We'll be singing, "Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit" arranged by William
Dawson.
It's currently out of print, so you can get copies from me. We will
also be making practice tapes for all that want them.

Trinity choir combined with 3 other choirs in Italy this past summer to
sing this piece in several towns and it ALWAYS brought the house down. The
Italians went crazy over it! It was also a great success in our
worship at Trinity when we came home. People said that they could really worship
the Lord when the music was filled with such joyful praise. So we want
that to happen again!!!

Rehearsals will be at Thursdays at 6 p.m. on September 14 and 21 at
Trinity United Methodist Church on the corner of Harrison Ave. and 19th Street
in Beaumont. We will also rehearse at Ford Park at 4 p.m. on the 24th.

When coming from Lumberton on 69, take the Delaware Exit and stay on
the feeder road to Harrison. Turn Right on 19th and park.

When coming from Nederland on 69 or Houston on 10 go to the Calder
Harrison Exit and take a left on Harrison.

When coming from Orange on 10, take the Gladys exit, go two blocks to
19th St. and take a left into the parking lot just before Harrison.

I am so excited I can hardly stand it!!! God is so Good!!! and This
will be a wonderful service!!! Please let all your musicians know that they
are needed. We have room for a 200 voice choir and there is no reason we
can't have one.

See you on the 14th at 6, at Trinity!!!

All the best in Christ,

Don

If you have a church in need of a musical keyboard

We have several members with families in the Beaumont District who have reported that numerous small churches have lost many items that they are not able to replace for a number of reasons.

If you have a church in need of a musical keyboard that is more in the line of a digital, two-manual organ keyboard with bass pedal board plus the full digital capacity of synthesizer sounds from contemporary to full orchestra and percussion effects, I have one to donate. [And it doesn't have to be a Methodist Church. Any church in need...]

It has been my home rehearsal instrument I use to arrange music, write music and rehearse. I have retired from playing the organ full time and will be downsizing. It is worth a small fortune, but my heart has gone out to those who have no instruments. (FYI I was the organist for Roger Shuemate from 1995 to 1998 at the Methodist Temple. The loss of that fabulous instrument is unbelievable.)

BREAKING NEWS! I just received an e-mail from Murray Batt that the
Welcome Back facility that sends out the TDCJ release info has burned to
the ground. Hopefully, some church will allow some of their facility to
be used to get this important info out on Welcome Back releases-- on a
temporary basis.

EXTREME HOSPITALITY! Some of the HS Teachers and former school mates,
plus the Operation Rebound team from the Gist State jail in Beaumont,
are taking a newly released Gist State Jail friend out to dinner to
celebrate. Now that is the start of a great aftercare outreach!
We are having another Tent Revival starting next Monday night. There
is a great renewal taking place at this facility.

Just a thought to United Methodist Churches--Want to turn around the
spiraling decline in membership that is happening across the USA??? Get
involved in Prison Ministry and all other facets of Restorative Justice
Ministries. After all, it was the love expressions of the original Holy
Club and incipient Enthusiast "Methodist" churches that got this
movement started anyway.

Alan Van Hooser

September is a month that gets our congregations back into the school year routine. I would like to suggest that we share some events with each other in September. Groves will have a prayer "mini-retreat", several prayer labyrinth dates and a Sunday night revival service. We have also started a "Modern" service at 6:45 PM each Sunday. I will send these dates out later in the week. Please reply to this e-mail with your events and share them with our neighbors.

We will have the small prayer Labyrinth for the entire month. It requires about 30' to fit. A large Sunday school class room, gym or fellowship hall will work. I can help to instruct your "guides" if you need them. Let me know if you need some printed material to explain the process of the Labyrinth. Call or e-mail me to have it in your church. It would be best to have it scheduled by August 15.

Thanks! I am looking forward to visiting some other churches.

Texas Annual Conference Overview- June / 2006

Texas Annual Conference Overview- June / 2006
by Sis. Gwen May, Lay Delegate to Annual Conference

What an awesome example of our great core beliefs of this Texas Annual Conference was demonstrated at the start on our thirty-seventh Annual Session. From Sunday, May28 th through Thursday June 1, 2006 a constant outpour of radical hospitality, passionate worship and faith forming relationships was demonstrated.

  • Our Vision- Vibrant, growing congregations changing lives and reshaping futures for Jesus Christ
  • Our Mission- Equip congregations to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the glory of God
  • Our Key Drivers- Spirit led excellence, fruitfulness, and accountability
  • Our Core Beliefs- Radical hospitality, Faith-forming relationships, extravagant generosity, fervent prayer and diligent study of scripture, passionate worship, risk-taking mission and connectional ministry.
  • Our Strategic themes: 1. Congregational Excellence. 2. Effective Missional Structure. 3. Clergy Excellence.

I experienced God at work each day through the daily worship services with dynamic clergy, such as Bishop Sharon Brown Christopher, Rev. B.J. Hightower, Rev. Dr. Jim Moore and of course our distinguished Bishop Janice Riggle Huie. The host church was the historic downtown First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Steve Wende being the host pastor.

Sunday night’s worship service was truly a blessing and praise-worthy period, because youth were in charge of the evening devotion. Several praise dance teams performed. Just Praise, the combined praise dancers of Spiritual Movers of God (SMOG) - St. Paul UMC and Praise in Motion (PIM) - United Methodist Temple had the house clapping and giving praise. I saw more youth under one roof than I have personally experienced in years.

Effective June 1, 2006 our district is the Southeast District. Through our strategic planning efforts, we are now the benefactors of structure designed to keep us connectional and keep us informed. Some of you may be wondering why we even have or need an annual conference. According to our 2006 Pre-Conference Journal we need one to:

1. Deal with administrative ,personnel and programs needs.
2. Share in celebration of our faith in worship.
3. Grapple with the needs of reconciliation among ourselves, laity, clergy, youth and adults as we affirm our various beliefs and judgements.
4. Find renewal and motivation for the Christian life, individually and as a church.
5. Discover avenues by which United Methodist may become empowered to be Christian people in witness and mission.
6. To enjoy the fellowship of our United Methodist family.

We approved two amendments to the resolutions that were before conference:

  • We mandated that half of the voting members of the Core Leadership Team be laity
  • We added the chairperson of Black Methodists of Church Renewal to the Missional Excellence individual team composition.

Reports were made by every single board, commission and committee. Dialog was extensive in reference to clergy sexual ethics policy. Here are highlights from a few that may be of interest :

1. Committee on Disability concerns - Deaf/hearing impaired members of our churches will be accommodated.

2.Safe Sanctuary- Over 10,000 background checks have been performed and almost 4,000 workers have been certified in the Conference Safe Sanctuary policy.

3 .Evangelism- The “Reclaiming the Vision” campaign introduced in 2005. Sixty churches signed up to be “test churches”. Fourteen were chosen with a good cross-section based on location, size, ethnicity and situation.

4.Stewardship-Rev.Melvin Amerson- Two more “Good $ense Ministry Training events to come in 2006.

5.Children’s Ministry-Amy Hodge - Two Seminars in 2006 ...Web site www.childrensministryconnection.org

6. Youth Ministries- 157 youth and young adult attended the Spiritual Life Rally in Oklahoma-2005. 280 youth and adults attended 6 th grade winter carnival. There were two Junior high and two Senior high retreats. The theme : “Fisher Christ”.

7.Partners In Mission- As a conference we responded to Katrina and Rita disasters by sending 5,633 teams of volunteers from Texas to Alabama-43 medical teams and 1224 construction teams.

8.Committee on Relief- Clay Whitaker- UMCOR continues to be the leading ministry of compassion and relief across the globe. The recommendation is that all churches be intentional regarding disaster preparedness. Check conference for training sites. Office 713 533-4965 Mobile 281 468-0832.

9.Commission On Small Membership Churches-This group manages the Redistribution Depot at Lakeview Methodist Conference Center. This is a great resource for the exchange of gently-used items such as choir robes, bibles, electronic accessories and more. St.Paul has already been blessed with choir robes, which will be premiered later in 2006 .

10. UMM- Only 10% of our churches have chartered UMM fellowships. President Kenneth Tielke says that it is essential to the health and growth of the church.

11. UMW- There were 703 flood buckets,1070 health kits,184 school kits, 88 cases of water plus additional monies were collected for flood buckets that total 3,334 .

We had access to workshops to attend on Tuesday. I attended “Sunday School is for Life”. We reflected on the vital role that Sunday school can play in developing Christian faith and discipleship. I was very pleased with the flow of activities for this conference. My concerns center around the decline in membership in our conference, despite an increase in population. One half of all United Methodist churches reported no new members in 2004.

Let us be intentional about being true and good stewards over God’s kingdom on earth. In the words of Bishop Huie in her Episcopal Address: “Fruitfulness is evident that the branches are connected to the vine. Fruitfulness is evidence that the congregation is achieving its mission. If your congregation is not demonstrating increasing levels of fruitfulness, it may lacking some of the practices of faith that Jesus taught us.”

Yours in Christ,

Sis. Gwen May

Bush, Sirleaf invited to address 2008 General Conference

Bush, Sirleaf invited to address 2008 General Conference

Jun. 5, 2006 News media contact: Linda Green * (615) 7425470* Nashville {329}

NOTE: Photographs and related reports, UMNS stories #328 and #330, are available at http://umns.umc.org.

TAMPA, Fla. (UMNS) - The Commission on the General Conference is inviting the president of the United States and the president of Liberia - both United Methodists - to address the denomination's 2008 General Conference in Fort Worth, Texas.

"It would be an honor to hear from United Methodist heads of state," said the Rev. Gail Murphy-Geiss, chairwoman of the commission. "It would be fitting to hear from President Bush as we are meeting in his native Texas. President Johnson Sirleaf is an extraordinary woman leading the effort to rebuild a country ravaged by war."

The 2008 General Conference meets April 23-May 2. About 1,000 delegates from the United States, Europe, Africa and Asia meet every four years to decide issues of church law and polity.

George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, are members of Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas, where both taught Sunday school prior to his election. He is the third Methodist to serve as U.S. president. The others were William McKinley (1897-1901) and Rutherford Hayes (1877-1881).

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is an active member of First United Methodist Church in Monrovia, Liberia. Before her inauguration in January, she participated in a worship service led by Liberian United Methodist Bishop John Innis and Bishop Peter Weaver of Boston, who was then president of the Council of Bishops. The United Methodist Church has been active in Liberia since 1822 and is the largest Protestant denomination in the West African nation. In 1977, Liberian Bishop Bennie D. Warner was chosen to be vice president of the country.

While the Commission on the General Conference traditionally invites the president of the United States to address the assembly, this will be the second consecutive conference where two United Methodist heads of state will be invited to speak.

In 2004, President Bush and Macedonia President Boris Trajkovski were invited to address the conference. Bush did not appear, though Laura Bush sent personal greetings to the assembly. Trajkovski, who had been scheduled to address the delegates, was killed in a plane crash that February. In 1996, United Methodist Hillary Rodham Clinton, wife of then-U.S. President Bill Clinton, addressed the General Conference in Denver.

Successful Charity Bar B Que Raised a total of $10,000 for four local charities.

Successful Charity Bar B Que Fest held by Aldersgate Trinity United Methodist Church in Port Arthur, Texas April 22! Raising a total of $10,000 for four local charities.
Aldersgate Trinity United Methodist Church held it’s first annual Charity Bar B Que Fest recently. Four charities were the recipients of the proceeds from the event. Those charities were Community Care Outreach, United Board of Missions, Port Cities Mission and the Salvation Army. The event was successful and each charity received a check for $2500.

Aldersgate Trinity United Methodist Church embarked upon this task to enhance the church’s concept of the virtue of charity. More than 60 members worked together the day of the barbeque and had a most wonderful time in the process. Many people in the community helped in the sale of the tickets for the Charity Bar B Que Fest. Also, many people in the community helped by donating money toward the cost of the food prior to the barbeque, thus allowing Aldersgate Trinity UMC to give 100% of the ticket sales to the named charities.

Pastor Joy Richards wishes to thank anyone who helped in anyway with the Charity Bar B Que. Please know how much our church appreciates everyone who purchased a ticket for the Charity Bar B Que as well as, all those who helped to advertise the event. Many people sold tickets and Barbeque was delivered to large orders of 10 or more.

Live music was provided at the barbeque by Second Wind, a praise band. A biker rally was held during the barbeque and awards were given for different honors to the Bikers present. James Brown was our celebrity Bar B Que Host and did a wonderful job greeting everyone. It was an interesting and exciting day filled with much good food and fellowship.

May our LORD bless the charities involved in all their goals set for the year. May our LORD bless all those who participated and helped in anyway with the Aldersgate Trinity United Methodist Church Charity Bar B Que Fest 2006. LORD have mercy upon us. In the name of Christ, amen.

Blessings,

Rev. Joy Richards

A Christ-centered recovery program

Dear Pastor,

In an effort to reach out to those in our communities who struggle with addiction, we are offering a Christ-centered recovery program, meeting at our church on Tuesdays at 6:30PM, beginning May 2. "The Most Excellent Way" was started in 1988 and has had much success around the country. The program includes the best features of Alcoholics / Narcotics Anonymous with a Christian emphasis and Bible study focus.

The motto of the program is Win-Disciple-Send which:

1. Win them to Christ
2. Teach them the Bible
3. Send them into the community to win others

Will you please help us get the word out by informing your congregation about us, and/or sending people who desire recovery to our meeting? We would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for your time. Should you have any questions, please contact me by email at chuck@umt.org or phone at 963-7852.

Yours in Christ,

FIRST UMC, BEAUMONT, SAT., MAY 20, 9 AM - NOON

The seminar includes the IM Disaster Preparedness Manual, which will be the primary tool that your committee will use in preparing a plan for the congregation. Each church may bring up to five people. (You could negotiate for a few more with a little kindness.)

Register today by contacting Jane Cunningham at (409) 833-1561 or jane8792@ubicaritas.org. For more information, call Clark Moore at 833-1561 or Pastor Clay Whitaker, 1st UMC, Vidor, at 769-2878.

RAISE REPORT

Hurricane Rita Recovery Efforts

Southeast Texas

It’s been 6 months since Hurricane Rita devastated Southeast Texas. The UMCOR office in Beaumont is in full operation with a staff of 8 working to assist individuals and families whose homes were damaged by the hurricane.

UMCOR has hosted 5 Family Advocate trainings in Beaumont, Orange and Port Arthur resulting in 22 volunteers agreeing to serve as Family Advocates. The Family Advocate is a special person acting out of a deep faith whose role is to enable/empower survivors to help themselves as much as possible. They identify survivors’ needs and connect them to resources. Working one-on-one with disaster survivors puts their recovery in motion.

The response from our Brothers and Sisters from across this great country has been heart-warming. We have had more than 1,600 volunteers from 10 states representing 295 churches and/or faith-based organizations working on homes in the affected areas (October 5, 2005-March 17, 2006).

Our “Tree of Restoration” is finally sprouting leaves. Each leaf represents a home that has been completed. As of March 31, the tree had 25 leaves. Another 75 homes are in progress or are ready to be assessed. Approximately 200 potential clients are waiting to be assigned to Family Advocates. Recovery is slow but we are making progress every day.

Even though it’s been 6 months since the disaster, the phones continue to ring daily in the UMCOR office from people who need our help. We have a long way to go, but with God guiding us, we will make it through the challenges that still lie ahead. We know that our God is bigger than any storm!

Family Advocates for the Victims of Hurricane Rita

TRAINING SUNDAY MARCH 26

1:00-6:00

UNITED METHODIST HOLY TEMPLE

PORT ARTHUR

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

As Family Advocates for the Victims of Hurricane Rita

It’s been almost 5 months since Hurricane Rita devastated Southeast Texas. Although some things have returned to normal, there are many, many families still suffering.

UMCOR Disaster Response is in the process of training Family Advocates to assist these families. The Christian Family Advocate is a special person acting out of a deep faith whose role is to enable/empower survivors to help themselves as much as possible. The job of the Family Advocate is to identify survivor’s needs and connect them to resources.

The Family Advocate works over the long-term with survivors to make an in-depth assessment of their needs in order to determine which are disaster-related, and then help the survivors develop a recovery plan. A Family Advocate must be a good communicator, must be resourceful and creative, persistent, patient and faithful.

The Southeast Texas Disaster Recovery Organization, a group of local congregations and faith based relief organizations, will support Family Advocates to find the resources, information and advocacy that they will need as they help disaster survivors rebuild their lives.

To be a Family Advocate, you are only required to attend one 6-hour training session.

If you think you would like to help in any way, please contact Christine Roberts at 409-543-6593 or email her at christiner@americanrealestate.com. If you have any questions or should you need additional information, please call Angela Baker at 409-892-0140 or 409-225-4380 or email her at praypatpers@yahoo.com.

We are operating under the 3 Ps --- Prayer, Patience & Persistence!

What is the Process?

  • Pray!
  • Attend one 6-hour training session
  • Complete a Family Advocate Volunteer Application
  • Meet with Angela Baker to review forms, resources, etc. that you will need to begin meeting with families
  • Determine amount of time you are able to commit, which will then determine the number of families that you will be assigned

  • Continue to pray!
  • Follow through with family until they have completed the recovery process

PRAYER, PATIENCE, PERSISTANCE!

EAST TEXAS NEEDS YOU!

You know the saying, 'Can't see the forest through the trees!' Well, we need to start seeing the houses through the trees.
